This area is overlooked by the Aorangi Ranges where legend has it that the Polynesian voyager Kupe abandoned 3 canoes - hence the shape. Kupe's image is on the labels. Larry McKenna is a legend, in his own lifetime, when it comes to New Zealand Pinot Noir. Taste Food & Wine has announced the first Great New Zealand Pinot Noir classification in whick Escarpment is listed as one of the four top rated wines. Escarpment is registered as a sustainable NZ producer and is currently following a 5 year plan to become oranically certified. Noticable in Larry's wines is the lack of the ubiquitous Sauvignon Blanc well made up for by the more interesting and unusual Pinot Gris. |
